Weiyi Liao, Doctoral Fellow

Hi, thank you for taking the time to read my bio. Whether you're currently facing stressful life events, seeking personal growth, trying to break free from the influence of your family of origin, or going through life changes, I am here to accompany you through the challenging times and help you find ways to improve.

I began studying psychology in China in 2014 and later pursued a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology in the United States. I’ve studied at Nanjing University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Long Island University in New York. Living in different countries, regions, and cities has cultivated in me a deep curiosity and passion for multiculturalism. I truly enjoy connecting with people from diverse backgrounds and often find common threads of joy and pain behind seemingly different life experiences.

During my doctoral training, I worked in various settings such as hospital intensive outpatient programs, university counseling centers, and community clinics. I am experienced in addressing concerns related to anxiety, depression, OCD, emotional dysregulation, family of origin issues, intimate relationships, and interpersonal trauma. I’ve also been actively involved in the LGBTQ+ community since my undergraduate years, and I’ve worked with many clients from sexual minority groups in clinical practice. I’m a strong advocate of affirmative care.

My therapeutic approach primarily integrates psychodynamic therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). On top of that, I also draw on elements from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based therapy, and interpersonal process therapy. In our sessions, you are welcome to ask questions about my background, workstyle, and treatment plans—I encourage you to voice any concerns. If you’ve never had therapy before, it’s normal to feel unsure about how it works—perhaps wondering whether therapy is effective, why a therapist talks a certain way, or how to know if I’m the right fit for you. These are all valid and meaningful questions and discussing them often leads to important progress.

In recent years, my clinical interests have included:

  • Mental health of sexual and gender minorities & DBT

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ExRP) for OCD

  • Neuropsychological assessment for ADHD/ASD

Lastly, I believe everyone goes through dark times in life. However, “There’s a crack in everything, and that's where the light gets in.
